Notes for Andrew Finley
According to the rental books of Cupar Angus Abbey, leased a one-fourth portion of Aughinlyth, at Pentecoast, for five years, and figures in different rentals up to 1546. In 1507, he appears as Bailiff of Cupar Angus, and in 1542, as Sheriff. In this capacity, he was associated with Donald Campbell and David Campbell, the grandsons of the Earl of Argyll. There is an Aberdeen Charter of Sale, 1491, by Andrew Finley, of Aughinlyth, to John Stewart of Fothergill, of the lands of Achnamarkmore, and this was followed by a notarial instrument taken by John Finley, son and heir of the late Andrew Finley, April 27, 1547, of the rights and reversions of the lands for twenty pounds, payable in one day between sunrise and sunset. There is then a precept of sasine by Andrew Finley in favor of Neill Stewart, as son and heir of Neill Stewart, given at Glentilt, June 4, 1545, in presence of John, son and heir of Andrew Finley, and on August 13, 1501, a Charter of Sale to Eleanore, Countess of Atholl. John Sstewart, Earl of Atholl's seal, and the seal of Andrew Finley, are appended, at Dunkeld, May 31, 1502. Andrew Finley died at Aughinlyth, Cupar Angus, prior to 1547. Andrew Finley married Janet Hay, a daughter of John Hay, of Erroll, Perthshire, a descendant of David De Haya, Sheriff of Forfashire, 1214 A. D., and also of William de la Haya, Cup Bearer to Malcolm IV, as he styled himself in a Charter in 1172, when he received the lands of Erroll in Perthshire. John Hay of Erroll was a great-grandson of Sir Gilbert Hay, a steadfast adheret of Robert Bruce. The Parish Register of Cupar Angus Abbey records the baptisms of their children.
