Notes for Ferdinand Mikula
Ferdinand, son of Karl and Annie (Woliske) Mikula, was born in Michelsdorf, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Dec. 21, 1895. His house number at the time was #78. He attended public school between September 16, 1901 and July 15, 1909. He did domestic work between November 20, 1910 and November 10, 1912. He left his work in good standing to depart for America. He departed for the United States with his sister-in-law, Rosa Stolz Mikula, and her son, Karl, aboard the S.S. George Washington. They entered the United States nine months after his brother and sister (Karl and Rosa) after a 12 day voyage from Bremen, Germany. Their arrival at New York on December 26, 1912 was five days after his 17th birthday.
Ferdinand was described as standing 5’7” tall with blue eyes and dark hair.
He came to Lucca, N.D. and, like his brother, Karl, worked on the Gust Stangler farm as a laborer for two years before coming to Alice. He was then self-employed as an interior-exterior painter. He also did minor cement repair, shingling, and general carpenter repair work.
Ferdinand married Selma Hartl, Feb. 14, 1928 at St. Henry’s church in Alice. They had three children: Norbert, Regina, and Veronica. Selma died of lung cancer Dec. 14, 1944 at age 39. Veronica was only three at the time. Ferdinand continued to work hard, devoting all his spare time to raising his family without the aid of a hired girl.
Ferdinand died on Feb. 3, 1978 in Riverside, California of stomach cancer. He was buried in Alice, North Dakota.1228,1238,840
