Notes for John Finley
Is mentioned in a Retour at Logyrate, in the Court of John, Earl of Atholl, whereby, on 29 July, 1457, he granted Glentilt to his son John Stewart, which formerly belonged to Finlay, Tochach (meaning Chief, or Earl), and by which he voluntarily resigned the Thanage of Glentilt, comprising seventeen townships. On July 29, 1457, John Finlay is served as heir to his father, John le Thane, of Glentilt, in the lands of Pepnocrife in Strathquay. The said John Finlay, son and heir of John, Bishop of Dumblain, evidently sold this land, as he is represented in the rental books of the Cupar Angus Cistercian Abbey, as living in the townships of Kethyk, in Cupar Grange, Forfashire, 1457-1461, having obtained, on October 10, 1457, a lease of a one-twelfth portion of the Grange for five years. He died in 1461, having married Mary MacRae, who was a widow in 1462. As relict of John Finlay, she is described, on January 20, 1462, as obtaining from Cupar Angus Abbey a renewal of her husband's one-twelfth portion for five years, paying on entry a tax of five merks.
