Notes for John Pyeatt
John and Martha J Blair Pyeatt
John Pyeatt was the first child of Jacob Piatt with his second wife Jane Young. [Note: some sources have John's father as, James, who was killed by Indians]. He was born June 26, 1735, in Path Valley, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and died before August 16, 1780, in Guilford County, North Carolina (or was killed in action 16 Aug 1780). The date of before 1778 is probably the most reliable as the 'orphans of John Pyatt' were granted in trust 433 acres of land on Haw River, Guilford County, North Carolina on December 16, 1778, by the North Carolina State Land Office (Grant No 70).
John married on December 13, 1757, at St James Church, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Martha Jane Blair who was born in 1737 in Northern Ireland (living 29 Feb 1768, Rowan Co, NC) she was the child of Rev. John and Margaret (Martha) Blythe Blair (some researchers have d/o Thomas Blair).
John and Martha were the parents of:

In 1784, a Guilford County, North Carolina court record shows that James Peat and Martha Peat came into Court and named Jacob Peat as their Guardian, who entered into Bond with Thomas Blear in the sum of one thousand pounds for the faithful discharge of his duties." In the list of children of John and Martha Pyeatt, Jacob is child #2 and Martha and James are children #3 and #5. It appears that Jacob Pyeatt (born 1760) is appointed guardian for his youngest sister and brother. Which at age 24 is a reasonable assumption. I also could not determine any other Jacob in this locality at that time who might have been the guardian. Jacob was married to Rachel Tatum and then Margaret Finley in Guilford County, North Carolina, during this time period. Thomas is probably Martha's father or brother. What I don't understand is why Martha would be a minor at this time. Many sources list her as born c1758. I don't believe a 26 year old would need a guardian unless she were somehow incapacitated mentally, in which case, I doubt if she is the same Martha who married John White. If she is truly younger than Jacob (born 1760) and Jean (per their listing in various record) then I think her birthyear of 1758 is in error and that she was probably closer in age to James. I do not know the source for Martha's birthyear. Perhaps someone has a cemetery inscription, etc. for the Martha who married John White. At the bottom of this page is a version two of this family which lists Martha as born 1771. While that date would certainly make her a minor in 1784, it would definatly rule out her being the wife of John White in 1788.
In 1785 in Guilford County, North Carolina (Deeds pp 102-103) "This indenture made this 3d Day of December one thousand Seven Hundred & Eighty five between William Gowdy of the County of Guilford State of North Carolina of the one part & Peter, Jacob, Jene Pyatt of the other part & also with Jacob Pyatt Guardian of James & Martha Pyatt of the other part...." This deed for 433 acres gave the five children of John possession of the land which was granted previously. The fact that Martha Jane Blair Pyeatt is not a party to any of the deeds or grant suggests she was dead by this time but no other proof is offered. Or, laws at that time might have precluded her from participating in this grant just as they precluded her from being a legal guardian to her own children.
On January 10, 1786, the three older Pyatts sold the 433 acres to Edward Tatom for 500 pounds. Was this a relative of Jacob's first wife, Rachel Tatum?

Version Two John Pyeatt was born 26 Jan. 1735 to Jacob and Jane Young Pyeatt and died in 1780. He married in 1755 in Rowan, NC, Jane Blare who was born in 1737.
The children of John and Jane:
Robert b: 1753 in Franklin Path Valley, Pennsylvania
Jacob b: 1756/60 in Rowan, NC m: 1791 in Guilford, NC, Margaret Finley
Benjamin b: 1756/57 m: 1795 Mary Waddell
Peter b: 1756/60 in Franklin Path Valley, Pennsylvania
James b: 1762/68 d: 1837 m: 1791 in Guilford, NC, Catherine Finley
Martha b: c1771 m: Guilford, NC, John White
Jane b: c1765 m: ? Davis
John Pyeatt was believed to served in Revolution. Was with Virginia troops: said to have been killed at battle of Camden 16 Aug. 1780.
There are many problems with this second version - the most apparent being that the children do not match the legal records available in Guilford County, North Carolina. It is presented only as a specimen of some of the faulty versions that might be floating around.
