Notes for Wesley J Zones
obituary added
Brother, John Zones, says that they were fishing from shore. Wesley fell in and apparently was unconscious. Attempts were made to save him, but he was already in too deep. John faintly recalls that Wesley was wearing boots. The boots may have contributed to his drowning.
Obituary notes for Wesley J Zones
Withrow School Boy Lake Victim

A sad tragedy at Park lake Sunday afternoon took the life of a popular senior of the Withrow high school, Wesley Zones.  He and his brother, John Charles, and their father went to the lake to fish.  Mr. Zones had taken two men across the lake in a boat and was on his way back when he heard cries from John Charles.  The two lads had been fishing near the bank.  Wesley jumped over to a stone and it turned with him, throwing him into the water.  He had on  heavy boots and a heavy coat.  When his body was found his coat was off, evidently he had attempted to free himself of some of his heavy clothing.  His brother called to him to kick and Wesley replied he couldn't.  The brother then attempted to help him with his pole.  Jessee and Jack Thomas were nearby and came quickly, and Jesse went in twice but the water was so deep he was unable to find Wesley's body.  Help was sent for from Ephrata and the sheriff responded, but it was three hours before they found the body and brought it to the surface.
Wesley J. Zones was born May 20, 1923, and passed away April 5th (1942).  He spent his grade school days at the Douglas school.  His junior and senior years were spent in Withrow.  He was a member of this year's graduating class.  His other high school years were in Waterville.  Had he lived he would have been valedictorian of his class.  He was their class president and president of the student body.  While in Waterville he was a Boy Scout.  He was also a member of the basketball team at Withrow.
Word was sent immediately to a brother, corporal Thos. C. Zones, who was at Camp Worden and he came home immediately, getting here early the next morning.  Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Zones, brothers Thomas, John Charles, Steven Robert, and sister Grace Caroline.  Two baby sisters preceded him in death.  He leaves also his grandmother, Mrs. Charlotte Clark, uncles, Harry and Elliott, and aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Hanson, and cousin Charlotte, and an aunt, Mrs. A. J. Simons in Montana, besides a host of friends all over the county.
Services were held at the Federated church Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Dwight Bennett in charge.  Burial was in the Waterville Fraternity cemetery with the Thomas funeral home in charge.968
