Jane E Ferguson was, most likely, born June 22, 1843 to parents Eden C. and Ruth Burroughs, in Delaware Co., New York. She lived in Roxbury until the 1860’s. She met Benjamin A. Ferguson, and they moved a few miles away to Windham, Greene Co., New York. There they operated a farm of at least 270 acres. They raised swine, milch (dairy) cows, oats, buckwheat, Irish potatoes, and hay. They also produced, butter, as well as, orchard and forrest products. They had eight children, five of which were born in New York, Alanson (b. abt. 1862); Nora A. (b. abt. 1863); Wright (b. abt. 1866); Laura Jane (b. abt. 13 Apr 1868); and Holmes (b. abt. Sep 1870).
Between 1870 and 1875, the family migrated westward to Dakota Territory. They settled in Bon Homme County (today in South Dakota), at that time a rapidly growing area. There farmed here for several years. It was in Dakota Territory where their children Ruth E. (b. Aug 1875) and Geroge B. (b. Jan 1878) were born.
Between the years of 1880 and 1885 the family migrated farther west into Washington Territory. They settled in Whatcom County, where they continued to farm. Their eighth and final child, Frank (b. Jun 1886), was born here.
Sometime between the years 1889 and 1900, Benjamin passed away. The 1900 US Census lists Jane E Ferguson as a widow and living with her son, Holmes, in Ferndale, Whatcom Co., Washington. Jane died, Thursday, June 22, 1916 at 1:30 p.m. Her cause of death was “probably heart disease, cause unknown”. She and her husband are buried in Enterprise Cemetery in Ferndale. Cemetery records record their graves as being side-by-side and unmarked in Block 3-A (likely lot 1, grave 8).
